Listening Devices

Listening Devices - Hidden Features

It can be lots of fun to play spy with your very own listening devices, but what should you look for in a voice recorder? Whether you plan on using a listening device to eavesdrop, in the line of duty, or to observe nature, you will need to understand the different features available on room recorders and voice recorders.

Voice Recorders - Activated or Continuous Recording

The average voice recorders will come with one of these two options, or both: voice activated and continuous recording. You might opt for a voice activated listening device because you don't know when or how often people are going to be speaking to each other in a given room. Whereas you might choose the continuous recording option on a room recorder because you know that this is a meeting room and there are often conversations that you need to know about. This option also ensures that your voice recorder will never miss any short conversations or noises.

Room Recorders - Silent and Undetectable

Your listening device or room recorder should always be silent and undetectable. If someone who is in the room where your voice recorder has been set up, you do not want them to hear a small click when the recording begins. If the listening device makes any noise or is perceptible, either because it looks like an unusual object in the room or because it looks like a bug, you are in trouble. So choose carefully and select a listening device that will not make any noise when it turns on or when it transmits any data. Similarly try to find a room recorder that will be easily hidden under a desk. Or try to get a covert room recorder that looks like a clock or a painting on the wall.

Radio Transmission or Recording

Voice recorders and listening devices usually come in two flavors: radio transmission mode and recording mode. The radio transmission room recorders will record voices and transmit this data through radio waves in the air. These will then be captured elsewhere onto a receiver or a computer. This is a type of live-action voice recording, which can then be saved onto a computer if need be. The second type if that of recording to a hard drive or other storage device locally. In this case a listening device will record conversations and store them to a memory disk, which is part of the listening device. This disk space is usually finite, so ensure that you have enough space before you plant your room recorder.
